From introvert to leader: This blog shares how curiosity transformed networking into a strength, empowering growth and leadership. Tips for mastering
I had always thought of myself as an introvert. Talking to people, making small talk, building connections — it all felt so out of reach. This was hardwired in my braine especially because I was an overseas-qualified physiotherapist in the UK.
During my early years in the UK, I avoided networking events like the plague. “That’s just not me,” I’d tell myself. Forget networking, I wouldn’t go to order food at a food counter/ bar/ sandwich station.
But deep down, I knew this belief was holding me back. How could I grow, learn, and create opportunities if I stayed in my comfort zone?
One day, I decided to take a chance. I attended a conference for physiotherapy in Nottingham. My heart was pounding, and I almost turned back at the door. But I remembered my goal: to grow into the kind of leader who inspires others. That meant stepping out of the shadows.
At that event, I learned something life-changing: networking isn’t about being outgoing or extroverted — it’s about being genuinely curious. This was double validated by the keynote speaker that evening CEO of Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. I still remember the day, what i heard and how it empowered me.
So, I started small.
👋 I introduced myself to one person and asked them about their work.
🤝 I practiced active listening and focused on learning something new from every conversation.
📚 I started learning from every individual I met and would write down what I noticed when people approached me.
Over time, these small steps became habits. Conversations became easier, relationships deepened, and opportunities started to open up. I realised that networking wasn’t about impressing people — it was about building trust and creating value.
Fast forward to today: I’m no longer the person hiding at the back of the room. Networking has become one of my greatest strengths, enabling me to grow into a leadership coach and mentor. Through my Physio Forge Formula, I’m on a mission to help 100,000 physiotherapists step into senior leadership and management roles — and networking is a key piece of that puzzle.
To all my fellow introverts or anyone who feels like networking isn’t “for them”: I’ve been there. But trust me, it’s a skill you can learn and master.
